What is Sibutramine?

Sibutramine (Sibutramine Hydrochloride) or SB is a monoamine reuptake inhibitor (MRI) that has the ability to suppress appetite to help you lose weight along with diet and good exercise. Sibutramine mechanism of action

Sibutramine is structurally similar to the class of amphetamines, although it does not have their biological properties. Like a centrally acting drug Sibutramine is an inhibitor of the reuptake of serotonin (53%), norepinephrine (54%) and dopamine (16%), as a result of which it increases the level of these mediators in the intersynaptic space. Thus, increasing the concentration of serotonin in the center of hunger and satiety, the drug suppresses appetite

The main effects of sibutramine:

inhibition of presynaptic reuptake of monoaminergic neurotransmitters in the central nervous system and suppression of appetite;

activation of anorexigenic secretion and decreased secretion of orexigenic neuropeptides;

increased energy expenditure and activation of the sympathetic effects of the peripheral nervous system.

Sibutramine can cause a change (improvement) in mood, because in the control of energy homeostasis and mood often overlapping areas of the brain are used (for example, the serotonergic system). Sibutramine was approved by the FDA in 1997 only as a drug for weight loss.

Sibutramine Dosage and Usage

The average dose of Sibutramine pills is 10 mg once a day in the morning, if this is not enough after a few days of use, the dose can be raised to 15 mg per day. As a rule, 6 months after the start of treatment and before stopping the drug, the appetite will normalize, and body weight is set on a plateau. Sibutramine Side Effects

• Insomnia
• Constipation
• Headache, flushing and joint pain.

Relatively often, side effects from the cardiovascular system occur (about 10%): an increase in blood pressure by 2–20 mm Hg, an increase in heart rate by 3–20 beats / min. In 2010, the FDA expressed concern about the high risk of heart disease and strokes with Sibutramine in people with cardiovascular disease. Side effects associated with its noradrenergic stimulation of the hypothalamus of appetite-regulating mechanisms and sympathomimetic properties are also observed: dry mouth, nausea, taste change, digestive upset, constipation, insomnia, anxiety, algomenorrhea, muscle and joint pain, difficulty urinating, impaired urination view.

At a young age, in the absence of heart and vascular disease, Sibutramine is considered a safe drug. If side effects occur, after withdrawal, all symptoms disappear without harm to health. Severe complications rarely occur.

Scientists believe that a person is at greater risk of being obese than with Sibutramine.
